About NREF

About the Forum

The National Renewable Energy Forum (NREF), the main official conference for renewable energy sector of Mongolia, has been annually organized since 2008.

In the first organized event, 150 participants attended the forum and now that its organization is held by under the auspices of Mongolian Prime Minister, the number of attendees has reached 600, and scope of attendees has been broadening.

The forum is the main platform to discuss the current scenario of Mongolian renewable energy sector, its bottlenecks, achievements and the possible future master plans of development.

Background

Due to the rapid global industrial development, the global average temperature has increased by 0.75 Celsius in the last hundred years, and if the scenario ensues, it is evitable that the average temperature would reach up to 4 Celsius by 2030. Scientific research study shows that Northern iceberg would be consequently melted, around 760 million people would be evacuated and the new type of ailment would be emerged.

United Nations Conference of Parties 21 was held in Paris in 2015, which 50 thousand delegates from 195 countries had participated and unanimously agreed to promote the production of renewable energy against climate change.

Therefore, 173 countries had renewable energy targets in place and 146 countries had support policies. Cities, communities and companies are leading the rapidly expanding “100% renewable” movement, playing a vital role in advancing the global energy transition. Production of renewable energy accounted for 26.5% of total energy production by 2018 and YOY growth has increased by 7.2%.

Mongolia has tremendous resource in term of the renewable energy and the potential production capacity of renewable energy from solar and wind energy resource is 2000 times bigger than Mongolian annual energy consumption and 2.4 times bigger than Chinese annual energy consumption. It shows that Mongolia has a huge potential for renewable energy development.

In recent years, in aligned with global renewable energy development trend, 20% of total installed capacity shall have been comprised from renewables in Mongolia. However, the current renewable energy production is at a relatively low level and accounts for nearly 10 per cent of total production.

Even though the growth of renewables has brought some direct implication as increase in feed-in tariff and utility-scale stochastic (uncertain) renewable generation, the social and economic positive impacts override those drawbacks. For example, within last two years, renewables were beneficial to Mongolia, where USD 400 million investments have made in renewable energy project and as a result, 2200 temporary and 200 permanent workplaces were created and emission of carbon dioxide is reduced by 700,000 tones.

It is vitally important for Mongolia as opportunity for adoption of renewables to every consumer shall be promoted not only by developing of renewable within integrated grid system but also expanding as off-grid, distribution grid and micro-grid.

Therefore, the 10th national renewable energy forum will discuss the current situation of renewable energy sector, potential development of micro-grid and off-grid systems and adoption of renewable energy into mining, construction and agricultural sector.

The main objective of open discussion is to discuss how to promote environmentally friendly and green energy among professional experts and propose the most optimal solutions for developing renewables in Mongolia.
